Smart Energy Educational Catalogue

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), jobs in the renewable energy sector reached 11.5 million globally during 2020, and are expected to grow exponentially over the next 10 years.

That's why one of the core values of the Barbados National Energy Policy (BNEP) is to promote education, awareness and capacity building, while also creating new jobs throughout the energy sector that increase overall employment opportunities in Barbados.

To achieve this, several educational institutions have already adapted their courses and programmes to include energy related classes and training. You can find detailed information for each option below:

University of the West Indies

For over 70 years The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has provided service and leadership to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world. Their current offer for energy related education options includes courses like:
  • ENSC 2003 Sustainable Energy Systems
  • PHYS 3460 Physics of Sustainable Energy Systems
  • Renewable Energy Research Experience for Undergraduates, Summer research program
  • CERMES Renewable Energy Management Program (in development)

Barbados Community College

The Barbados Community College is a dynamic centre of learning which exists to meet the changing education, training and development needs of societies it serves. They currently offer a Certificate in Photovoltaic Design & Practice, which is a professional training course that equips practitioners to design and safely install Grid-Tied and Battery Based Systems. Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology

The mission of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology is to produce skilled and innovative graduates through competency-based training and the promotion of lifelong learning. In order to fulfill this mission, they currently offer several energy related courses or programmes, including:

Barbados Vocational Training Board

The Barbados Vocational Training Board is responsible for the coordination of various Schemes of Training under the Occupational Training Act Cap 42. These Schemes of Training regulate the training of apprentices and trainees in various skills and occupations. Training is given through an integrated system of modular Instructions, providing a unique form of training with a theoretical and practical component. The majority of the training is delivered in the work environment.

The institution currently offers an Apprenticeship in Solar Water Heating Systems Technician.  Upon completion the apprentice should be capable of demonstrating safe working habits, interpreting drawings, planning and laying out pipework and fittings, repairing, maintaining and servicing solar heating systems.
